Buying Guide for Furniture

One must be very careful when buying a furniture for either the house or the office. This is because most of the furniture seem to be fantastic but would not be strong enough to bear the weight of the seater or the user. Hence, a careful and close study about the furniture will help one to buy the most appropriate one.

Wood that has a lacquered finish requires only dusting and the sticky marks that are found on this kind of wood can be easily removed. Wood that is oiled or waxed shows off the grain on the wood and thus helps in giving a natural finish. Woods are sometimes painted to give a look of a flat even coloured surface or a distressed antiqued look.

One must know that the furniture that is made of wood is a natural product. As a result one can find grain pattern along the branches and length of the tree. However the grain pattern may differ depending upon the age of the tree. One may note some colour variations as different parts of the wood absorb more oil or stain than the others. Wood must also be protected from moisture and heat as this may result in warping or splitting.

Here are few guidelines before buying furniture:

1. The furniture that you buy must long last and must be durable and good to buy. It must also add to its price value.

2. Have an idea about the duration of the usage of the furniture and about its exact usage. Baby cribs will be used for short term. Hence there is no need to spend a lot on it. Similar concept for short term and long term usage can be applied in the case of other furnitures also.

3. Measure the area where you are planning to put the furniture and chose the furniture accordingly.

4. Decide about the style of furniture you are about to get.

5. Decide about how much you can spend on the furniture.

6. Planning is an essential matter when one decides to buy any product.

Guidelines to buy case goods:

Case goods are those that are used as a storage or used for display. The following gives guidelines about buying case goods.

1. Hard woods are got from non needled or broadleaved trees whereas soft woods are got from needle bearing trees such as cedar or pine. These woods are easily prone to marks or impressions.

2. Solid wood refers to exposed pieces of the wood. Solid woods tend to expand and contrast due to changes in the humidity levels. Particle board or plywood have the ability to withstand and do not easily split or warp.

3. Drawers must be jointed and dovetailed. These must also be smooth and snag free inside. Also check if the drawers come with glides and stops.

4. Doors of the furnitures must swing easily without noise and long doors must be attached with the study hinges.

5. Tables must not shake when rocked. Also the leaves must be fitted properly.

Guidelines to buy upholstered furniture:

1. The wood piece must have enough padding having no hurting wood edges.

2. Wood patterns must have matching forms as they depict the sign of higher quality.

3. Stitching must be proper without any gap in between.

4. Check if the frames are constructed with a kiln-dried hardwood that is durable.

5. Check if the frame is joined with the dowels.

6. Use tightly woven fabric that last longer. Woven fabrics last longer than the printed ones.

7. Make sure you sit on the furniture to test its strength.
