Choosing Patio Umbrella

Protection from direct sunlight and heat, while enjoying the leisure in patio or poolside is an essential requisite and patio umbrella is the only refuge in the circumstances.  Patio umbrellas are of two types. They are used in home patios and in commercial resorts or restaurants.  Apart from their utility, patio umbrellas are ornamental too, adding gaiety to the venue.

In choosing a patio umbrella it is important to follow certain guidelines.  The design and construction should be strong and sturdy.  The pole is to be strong enough to support the umbrella as it has to withstand the wind pressure.  This is relevant especially in the case of a free standing umbrella.  Stainless steel or aluminium base plates are ideal.  Nylon hubs are to be preferred instead of plastic.  Make sure that the umbrella is easy to open and close.

Patio umbrellas are available in different shapes, designs and colours to cater the tastes and requirements of the customers.  If the table is provided with a hole to fix the umbrella, it is better to choose a light weight one. In certain varieties, the pole will not be at the centre of the umbrella.  It will be positioned in an offset way to provide cover to a larger area.  This type of offset umbrella is generally used when there is no table in the middle.  Another type of patio umbrella with cotton nets around is intended to keep the flying insects away, especially in the evenings or nights.

Different types of mechanisms like cranks and pushpin, pulley and pin etc are adopted in the making of patio umbrellas.  Such mechanisms are to facilitate opening and closing without difficulties.  The choice of the mechanisms depends on the purpose for which the umbrella is used.  If it is for home patio, it is better to choose a simple mechanism.  A home patio umbrella can be of light weight, but sturdy. Make sure that the opening, closing as well as tilting mechanism functions smoothly.  A weak structure may collapse under wind pressure causing hazards.

The poles which support the umbrellas are generally made of wood, aluminium, fiberglass, steel and plastic. Latest patio umbrella poles are made of synthetic materials making them light but strong. For home patio umbrellas, two piece poles are used to enhance the portability and facilitate compact storage. Commercial umbrellas are invariably heavy in its construction to withstand the severe climatic conditions to which they are exposed in resorts.

The fabrics used for modern patio umbrellas are colourful with beautiful and enchanting designs.  Durable synthetic materials are used.  Materials with attractive paintings are the latest introduction.  Flowers and foliage are painted on the fabrics to blend smoothly with the natural surroundings of the patios.  Many different sizes are available. Even though square and rectangular shaped umbrellas are available it is better to choose round ones for home patios.

To avail a wider choice of umbrellas with exotic colours and designs, better shop online.  The dealers’ websites will provide the customers with catalogues depicting an array of different types of patio umbrellas.  Free shipping, warranty and discounts are the advantages of online shopping.
