Acanthus:
Acanthus is a decorative woodcarving based on the acanthus leaf. Acanthus is a Mediterranean plant with fleshy scalloped leaves. It is most commonly used for carved ornaments, decorative mouldings, etc.
Anthemion:
Anthemion is a decorative motif that looks similar like leaf and flower of honeysuckle. It is a fanlike repeated motif used for decorated purposes.
Apron:
Apron is the base of the furniture framework of a piece. Apron is also called as skirt.
Armoire:
Armoire is a French term, used to denote cupboards for clothes and household items storage. It usually comes with two large doors and interior decorations.
Ball foot:
It is a round shaped foot usually used with oak and walnut based chairs and furniture.
Banding:
It is a decorative strip of contrasting wood usually used around the edges of furniture like tops of the table, front part of drawers, panels, etc. In the cross banding types, the contrasting wood fitted at the right angles of the main veneer.
Beading:
It is a decorative border usually used on the furniture that has embossed beads of equal size fitted in a single row. In case of elongated beads, it is called as reel and bead.
Bombe:
Bombe is a French term that is used to refer the chest, which has convex sides and swelling. It is usually used with the furniture case like commodes, etc.
Buffet:
Buffet is usually used for displaying silverware. It is large in size with heavy display cupboards with open shelves.
Bureau:
It is a desk with cylindrical front that has been enclosed with fitted interior and drawers.
Campaign Furniture:
Campaign furniture is furniture that was actually designed to be used by military officers at the military campaigns. This furniture is highly portable and it has been designed to fold or unscrew.
Carcase Furniture:
Carcase furniture is used to describe furniture items that has box like body construction. For example: bookcases.
Case Goods:
Case goods are a type of furniture that is not upholstered and it is usually made of wood. It is usually used to describe the furniture that is used in bedroom and dining room.
Commode:
The term commode can be either used to refer the chest of drawers or a toilet. These commodes have more decorations with bombe shape and the top fitted with marble.
Dovetail:
A dovetail is a fan shaped wedge used in wood furniture for interlocking. It is mainly used for joining two pieces of wood at right angles. Dovetailing is usually used in drawers and it increases the strength and stability of the furniture.
Dowel:
It is a small, headless pin made up of wood used in the construction of furniture. Usually, used in joining two pieces of wood. Each piece of wood would be having a round hole, into which the dowel is inserted and glued.
Dresser:
It is a low long chest of drawers that is usually used for storing clothes.
Dropleaf table:
It is a type of table constructed with pivot legs that helps in supporting the extended leaf.
Dumb Waiter:
This is a type of furniture with central shaft and circular trays. These circular trays often revolves enable those who are dining to help themselves.
Fall Front:
Fall front is usually called as drop front. It is a hinged, flat front of bureau that falls forward to form a writing surface.
Fluting:
Fluting is usually used in table legs of neoclassical furniture. It is opposite of reeding, which has parallel lines of shallow, concave moulding. And it is fitted from the top to the bottom of the column.
Fretwork:
It refers to ornamental carving and it is often interlaced or pierced in appearance.
Gadroon Moulding:
Gadroon moulding refers to a rounded moulding that is usually carved in convex surfaces.
Gilding:
Gilding refers to a decorative finish in which a layer of gold is applied to glass, ceramics, silver, leather, or wood. The process of gilding involves spreading of gold leaf or gold powder on to the surface. Parcel gilding is the process of gilding only in certain parts of the furniture.
Lacca Povera:
Lacca Povera is an Italian term that refers to the form of decoupage. In which sheets of engravings were coloured, cut and fitted over the prepared piece of furniture. Then, a layer of varnish is applied to give glossy look to the furniture.
Marquetry:
Marquetry is a decorative veneer that is made up of shaped pieces of wood. It usually designed with different colours that are joined together to form a design or picture. And they are used on the chests of drawers and cabinets of drawing tables, dining tables, etc.
Patera:
Patera is an oval shaped ornament that is fitted over a flat surface. It is usually decorated with floral design, a rosette, or fluting.
Pietra Dura:
Pietra Dura is an Italian term that refers to the expensive form of inlay using some of the precious stones like jasper, lapis, etc. And it is usually used to create decorative panels for table tops and cabinets.
Secretaire:
It is French term that refers to the free standing writing cabinet. It is usually constructed with a slim drawer below the top and a fall front writing surface. And there is an arrangement of drawers and cupboards below the writing surface.
Sofa Skirt:
It refers to the cloth facing that hangs from the bottom edge or across the front piece of furniture. These skirts are usually used to hide the legs and they can completely change the way a sofa looks.
Tongue and Groove:
It refers to a wooden joint in which a tongue along the one strip of wood is fitted in to the groove along another strip of wood.
Veneer:
It is a thin sheet of wood that is glued to interior wooden furniture. These veneers have superior value.
